Contractor: Bay Ltd.
Client/Owner: TXDOT Corpus Christi
Location: Corpus Christi, TX
Product: ACE XP™
Surface Tech provided a cost-free trial of ACE XP™ to improve crack resistance on a roadway that sees high volume semi-truck traffic.
The savvy managers at TXDOT Corpus Christi took full advantage of Surface Tech’s ACE XP Pilot Program on a heavily traveled half-mile section of the city’s US-44 frontage road. The highway serves as a main artery to the area’s oil fields as well as the primary route between Corpus Christi and Laredo. An abundance of semi-trucks use the roadway to access the industrial complexes alongside, and along with heavy ESAL loads, all have created a multitude of cracking issues.
The agency and its contractor, Bay, Ltd., were interested in seeing how ACE XP would compare to the conventional mixes they have used over the past few years.
In a day-long production, the Bay team installed 800 tons of Type D mix with a 64-22 base and 16 percent recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) as an overlay. Surface Tech provided enough ACE XP™ to dose two sections of the roadway at both single and double doses. Surface Tech also provided its new MD Mini dosing equipment for the job.
“Bay was new to ACE XP, but they were eager to try it because they had used Forta-Fi before and wanted a comparison. As a cost-free trial it was an easy experience for them, and no issues were faced during the production,” said Dario Alvarez, Surface Tech.

The ACE XP Pilot Program was developed for first-time users of the product. The program offers a reliable way to test Surface Tech’s ACE XP promise — to produce asphalt pavements that are stronger and last longer than any comparable product on the market.
